SUMMARY:An Evening with Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst
LOCATION:Ginsburg Hall
DESCRIPTION:Holly and Mat have been on the cutting edge of art and ai thr
oughout this current arc. They recently announced a show at the MoMA next
year. Should be interesting to hear what they're thinking about.\n\nADMI
SSION:\nAdmission is free and open to everyone. Reservations required.\n\
nRSVP\n\nDESCRIPTION:\nIn an age of AI crossing over into art and beyond\
, how do artists navigate agency\, ownership\, and creativity? Berlin-bas
ed artists Holly Herndon and Mathew Dryhurst may have an answer. Together
\, they create precedent-setting projects where technical systems are art
works unto themselves—work they describe as “Protocol Art\,” interv
entions at the level of systems and protocols rather than objects\, argui
ng for agency at the infrastructure layer. The future of AI doesn’t hav
e to belong to slop.\n\nWhat to Expect:\nHerndon and Dryhurst will give a
presentation of their artistic ideology and pioneering work at the inter
 section of music\, visual art\, technology\, infrastructure\, and governa
nce. The evening will include a discussion and audience Q&A facilitated b
y USC Vice Provost for the Arts and Annenberg professor Josh Kun\, examin
ing the questions that initiate their artistic practice and the general s
kepticism around the future of generative AI and the arts.\n\nBios:\nHoll
y Herndon holds a doctorate in Computer Music from Stanford University. H
er awards include the 2022 Ars Electronica STARTS prize\, Austria's first
Digital Human Rights Award (2024)\, the Kairos Prize (2025)\, and the De
utschen KI Prize (2025).\n\nMathew Dryhurst Mathew is a Senior Research A
ssociate at HAI Lab and fellow at the Institute for Ethics in AI at Oxfor
d University\, and has held faculty positions at NYU and the European Gra
duate School. He is a widely consulted voice on AI policy\, copyright\, a
nd the political economy of cultural production\, contributing to debates
around data rights and the governance of generative AI.\n\nHerndon and D
ryhurst run Herndon Dryhurst Studio and have co-produced critically accla
imed albums Platform (4AD/RVNG 2015) and PROTO (4AD/2019)\, and developed
Holly+\, a protocol for shared ownership and licensing of an artist's id
entity and intellectual property. In 2022\, they co-founded Spawning\, an
organization that attempted to build a web-scale data permissions protoc
ol for AI. Its tools Have I Been Trained and the Do Not Train standard—
covering 2 billion+ works—proved influential in machine learning policy
discussion.\n\nPresented by USC Visions and Voices\, Arts Now\, and the
 USC Thornton School of Music.\n\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/an-evening-
